As one of the biggest deltas in the world – around 55,000 people live in the region – Mahakam currently faces environmental and social problems, which include a lack of revenue due to the decrease in fishing yields. Deforestation has destroyed the ecological equilibrium and is endangering the biodiversity and economy of the surrounding area.

Our partnership with Planète Urgence and Yayasan Mangrove Lestari in Indonesia, focuses on mangrove reforestation, sustainable aquaculture, crab production and microcredit funds. The reason for these measures is because of Borneo’s dwindling fishing industry, which has led locals to turn to logging for their livelihood.

In 2016, 59,000 trees were made ready for planting. 100 guidebooks on reforestation were reproduced. A model for crab production in inactive ponds was finalised, and a percentage of salaries paid to seed collectors went towards the microcredit funds. Training and awareness raising sessions on climate change were delivered to 1,108 people. Through the micro-credit programme, 924 people have been supported.
