Supporting child protection efforts in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine is having a devastating impact on the country’s 7.5 million children. They continue to be killed, wounded and deeply traumatized by the violence. Families are terrified, in shock and desperate for safety. Since the war started, nearly two-thirds of Ukraine’s child population has been displaced.

The Trafigura Foundation has signed a funding agreement with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for a total of USD 1 million to support ongoing child protection efforts in Ukraine.

A key focus of UNICEF is to deliver vital mental health and psychosocial support services to children and families affected by the war. Through outreach teams and mobile protection services, at risk individuals can be identified and supported. A growing network of child and family friendly spaces in Ukraine, known as ‘Spilno' centres, provide families on the move with access to safe spaces as well as vital services, including protection, counseling and play.

UNICEF is also working closely with partners in Ukraine to ensure that child protection systems are functional and strengthened. Capacity building and training provided by UNICEF focuses on issues such as family tracing for unaccompanied children, psychosocial support, and prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse and trafficking.
