Work and Learn Centre, Stamford USA
Skills Training Centre
The Work and Learn Centre has been developed
over several months jointly by the Stamford Charity Committee and a
highly-regarded Stamford-based non-profit NGO (Domus). It aims
at setting up a “Work & Learn Centre”, where vulnerable or
marginalized Stamford youth would be trained and taught some basic
– and marketable – professional skills (life skills as well)
through “small businesses” such as boat-building, boat-repair,
bicycle repair workshop, horticulture, handymen crew, etc.
The kids would be referred to the centre by
the local social services and various departments of the CT State
government. Year 1 would target some 50 kids, year 2 another 80 and
year 3 some 100.
The values carried by the project are very much in line
with Trafigura’s one; spirit of entrepreneurship, dedication, will,
and commitment to reach one’s full potential.
The Work & Learn Program, run by social
services nonprofit Domus, is designed to help young people aged 14
to 25 make the successful transition from high school to skilled
jobs, college, or vocational studies. It opened in Stamford USA on
19 October 2010.
