Fundación Integración Comunitaria, Peru
Supporting Rural Communities
The Fundación Integración
Comunitaria has been established jointly by several Trafigura
entities in Peru, with the objective to provide support and
assistance to the impoverished communities in the regions where
they operate. Several projects have been undertaken in 2008, with
complementary funding from external donors:
- Initial studies for a vast irrigation project (including
two small 323 kW hydroelectric plants) serving a thousand families
in the Tajata Lake region;
- Promotion of profitable crops for industrial applications
(canola, tara and other fruits) with income-generating potential
for the communities;
- Free health- and dental-care campaigns throughout the
year in 17 rural and Andean communities (for a total of almost
7,000 consultations);
- Supply of medicines and medical equipment, in association
with the Asociación Vida Perœ, a Peruvian NGO;
- Support to psycho-educational training for elementary
school children with violence-prone behaviour and low learning
capacities in Callao suburbs, in association with the local
university;
- Specific and targeted assistance programmes to the
villages in the Pampas Galeras area (medical care, support to local
schools, establishment of nurseries...);
- Rural development educational programmes in the specific
environment of Andean communities;
- Various small projects (refurbishment of schools, child
entertainment programmes, support of educative radio programmes,
etc.);
From 2007 until 2010, major donations were allocated to a
housing reconstruction programme for the communities who lost their
houses after the earthquake of 15 August 2007.
The local Trafigura entities are
committed on a long term basis to support the projects developed
and managed by the Fundación Integración Comunitaria; for its part,
the Trafigura Foundation provides the complementary funding
required by the projects.
