A Community
Centre in a Resettlement Area
This reconstruction programme came
as a post-disaster recovery project after the 2007 earthquake which
struck the Sichuan province in China and left hundreds of thousands
of people with their homes and lives destroyed, and in dire need of
support and assistance.
NGODPC, a Chinese NGO, was selected
by Trafigura employees of the Shanghai office for its project to
establish a Community Centre in a resettlement area of 5,000
persons close to city of Shifang, 70 km west of the province's
capital Chengdu. Beyond the sole construction of the premises
hosting the centre, the project also aims at developing several
community services within that centre, tendered to specialized
Chinese NGOs, servicing the most vulnerable groups: the jobless,
the elderly, the disabled, children and adolescents, women.
The programme is foreseen over a
period of 3 years (2008-2010) and it has effectively started.
It is entirely funded by the Trafigura Foundation.
