Improving the Situation of
the Disabled People
The Fédération Burkinabé
des Associations pour la Promotion des Personnes Handicapées
(FEBAH) conducted in 2008 a country-wide survey on the situation of
disabled people in Burkina Faso. The ultimate goal was to provide
baseline information for the International Handicap Forum which
took place in Ouagadougou in November 2008. This conference
gathered all the stakeholders involved in this theme in the
country: national authorities, national/international NGOs, policy-
and law-makers, all striving for making recommendations to improve
the situation of the disabled people in the country, one of the
most vulnerable groups as in many other countries. The conference
eventually resulted in a Draft Law for the Disabled, which was
submitted to the Burkina Faso parliament. On 1 April 2010, the
National Assembly of Burkina Faso has unanimously adopted the law
for the promotion and protection of the disabled people.
The Trafigura Foundation was one of
the main funder of the initial survey.
