Fundación Abrigo, Honduras
Shelter Services for Underpriviledge Patients
The mission of Fundación Abrigo is to provide
a dignified temporary shelter to low income patients and/or their
relatives coming from Honduran inner areas to receive medical care
or treatment in the country’s 2 major public hospitals (Tegucigalpa
and San Pedro Lula). The 2 shelters, of 150 beds each, are managed
by Fundación Abrigo. Some 72,000 people have been hosted in 2009,
and over 200,000 meals have been served. Next to providing for food
and accommodation, FA offers other services as well, such as
hygiene & dental care training, medicines, covering of
transportation costs, funeral arrangements, etc.
Puma in Honduras has already developed some
close cooperation with Fundación Abrigo (over $15,000, including
our matching funds, have been raised last year by Puma employees
and service station operators). Strong involvement of the Puma
staff is also foreseen – e.g. in the repainting of the shelters,
general upkeep, preparation of meals,etc.
