Singapore
The Singapore Charity Committee (“SGCC”),
including founding member Stephanie Stavrinides from Dubai, office
works hand in hand with Trafigura Foundation to represent the
Singapore office on any charitable work. The SGCC has seen vast
support from the employees with the aim to raise funds to help
charitable organizations in Singapore as well as in Asia. The
committee endeavors to participate in at least 2 major fundraising
exercises with the help and dedication from all our Singapore
staff.

Project Supported by the SGCC
Working for Children in Cambodia
Working for Children (WFC) http://www.wfc-kh.org/ is a
registered, non-profit charity committed to assisting orphans, poor
and vulnerable children in rural communities in Siem Reap Province,
by providing them with residential care and education. It also
offers vocational training opportunities such as agricultural and
livestock farming to equip the children with skills to
self-sufficiency and ultimately break out of the cycle of poverty.
The orphanage, located in Puok District, currently houses 34
children.
A portion of the donations raised from previous events by the
Singapore Charity Committee has been used to purchase the adjacent
land to the orphanage. The land will be used to build a chicken
coop and pen to house more chickens (also funded by the Charity
Committee) with a 3-fold goal to provide the children with farming
opportunities, improve the children’s protein intake of meat and
eggs and having some for sale.
On 14 November 2009, members from the Singapore Charity
Committee (Rosanna Sugden and Stephanie Stavrinides) made their
first visit to the orphanage to meet the children and access the
orphanage program. Plans are also in place for follow up visits by
our committee members, who will also be bringing along
nonperishable food (and possibly rice) for the children.
We are also looking to purchase sewing machines to establish a
Pre-Vocational Training Center for the older children, through the
contributions raised through the Singapore marathon in December
2009.
Christmas Gifts for Metta School Children
115 needy students received their Christmas presents from a bevy
of Santarinas on 12 January 2010. Representing the Singapore office
of international commodities trader Trafigura, the latter
distributed items ranging from soft toys to kites, school bags to
stationery vouchers – items that were on the kids’ wish list.
Staff members of the company participated in this corporate
outreach initiative by fulfilling the wishes with their purchases.
The most unique request came from Md Abdullah Bin Omar Khan, who
wanted a fresh flower bouquet for his mother. The 16-year-old’s
thoughtful gesture moved the staff into buying a gift specially for
him.
In addition, Trafigura donated a pottery spinning wheel worth
S$1,200 and batik painting essentials to the school. In
appreciation of the company’s generosity, a batik painting made by
the Metta School Alumni was presented to its Charity Committee
Chairperson, Stephanie Stavrinides.
Metta Charity Run 2010
On 6 March 2010, 89 members comprising of Trafigura employees,
family and friends participated in the Metta Charity Run organized
by the Metta Welfare Association. Runners had the option to choose
between participating in the 5km or 10km scenic route around the
serene East Coast Park in Singapore. The wholesome and fun-filled
event raised a total of S$1850 (around US$1320), which was matched
a dollar for dollar by the Trafigura Foundation. All of the
proceeds went to the Metta Welfare Association http://www.metta.org.sg/, which
provides health care and welfare services for the needy and less
fortunate.
